Panicale is situated 445 metres above Lake Trasimeno, which is one of Italy's biggest lakes. From here there are only 130 km to Florence and less than 200 km to Rome.
The oldest buildings in the town are 1000 years old and the once ancient fortress has maintained its medieval charm. The town has two gates, snugly built stone houses and villas, narrow lanes, squares, bridges, arches and, not least, several flights of stairs to reach the different levels of the town. The grey houses are decorated in summer with multi-coloured flower pots. All this gives the visitor a special warm feeling and a sense of the medieval.
LIVELY AND PEACEFUL
Although the town is full of life, the whole atmosphere is peaceful. Small shops, excellent restaurants, bars or coffee-shops, are just at a few minutes' walking distance which become the social centre for locals and tourist alike. Here you have Europe's smallest public theatre and several churches with fascinating history!
At Christmas, Easter, in summer and during the grape and olive harvests, the peace is not broken but mingled with fun or sometimes more cultural events. It is somewhat incredible, considering that the whole town holds less than 400 inhabitants!
SHOPS AND MORE...
Within the town you will find two grocery stores and a vegetable shop, a butcher's shop, a tobacconist with international newspapers. There are also three restaurants, a theatre, a tourist agency, a hairdresser, and a barber shop.
Right outside the wall you have a post office, a bank with a bank-o-mat (ATM) which accepts all the major cards, a pharmacy, a medical office, and a bakery.
But if you look for malls, open markets and filling stations, you must go to towns just outside Panicale. In Pineta, situated 3 km from Panicale, just after Macchie you will find a supermarket with a good assortment of products from fresh vegetables and fruit, to meat and fish, cereal to pastries.
CLOSED IN THE AFTERNOON
From Monday to Saturday, the shops are usually open between 8.00 a.m. and 7-30 p.m., but closed between 1.00 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. Grocery stores are usually closed one afternoon a week, as a rule on Thursdays; clothes, lingerie, hairdressers are closed on Monday morning. There is a notice on the doors giving you details. During the summer season from June to August, you will probably find the bigger grocery stores open on Sunday morning up to 12.00 a.m.
